The biggest World Cup the world has ever seen

There has never been a World Cup like this one.

This time there were 104 games to watch, way up from 64 at the last tournament.

It was the first 48-team World Cup, up from 32, so it was the biggest field of countries ever.

All of it was spread across 16 host cities in 3 countries: the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

That was a whole month of football, in some of the biggest stadiums on the planet.

Many of these venues hold 60,000 to 80,000 fans, and most of them were packed.

Across the full tournament, more than 5 million fans were expected through the gates, the most a World Cup has ever drawn (the old record was 3.5 million back in 1994).

(Group stage means the first round, where teams are split into groups and play each other to reach the next round.)

So much football, so many countries, so much fun, all in one summer.

The whole thing felt like the biggest party in the world, and the fans had a front-row seat.

Below are some of the games people will remember.

Some of the games that defined the tournament

  • France vs Sweden (June 30)

France looked very strong after winning all 3 of their group games, but Sweden had dangerous strikers in Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres, so the favorites could not relax.

  • England vs DR Congo (July 1)

England were one of the favorites, but DR Congo were the surprise team back at a World Cup after 52 years, and the loser went home.

  • Spain vs Austria (July 2)

Spain were many people's favorites to win the whole tournament, but Austria tried to pull off another shock in a year that was full of them.

  • Portugal vs Croatia (July 2)

Two legends met in the same game, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric, and only one of them got to play on while the other went home for good.

  • Argentina vs Cape Verde (July 3)

Lionel Messi and the 2022 champions faced Cape Verde, the tiny island team that was the surprise story of the tournament.

  • Canada vs Morocco (July 4)

The first round-of-16 game, with co-hosts Canada on home soil against Morocco, who had just knocked the Netherlands out on penalties.
