England forward Anthony Gordon scored in the 55th minute to make it 1-0.

And you could hear their fans in Atlanta going crazy.

In that moment a whole country started to believe they were getting closer to bringing it home.

Now England only had to hold on.

And for the most part they managed to keep Argentina away from their goal.

Even Messi could not find a pass.

Until he finally found one.

In the 85th minute Messi passed the ball to Argentina's midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

Fernandez struck it from outside the penalty area and scored to make it 1-1.

That pass was an assist, which is the pass that sets up a goal.

And Fernandez plays his club football in England for Chelsea, so English fans know exactly how good he is.

At 1-1 this was heading for extra time, the 30 more minutes teams play when a knockout game is tied after 90 minutes.

It never got there.

Because Messi sent over a cross in the 90+2 minute.

Argentina's forward Lautaro Martinez met it with his head and made it 2-1.

Martinez had only come on as a substitute, which is a player brought on from the bench during the game.

And the 90+2 means his goal came in stoppage time, the few extra minutes a referee adds at the end for time lost during the game.

England had no time left.

For the record, our preview had England winning this 2-1.

That call lasted 85 minutes.

And the man who beat England did not even score.

Messi set up both goals instead.

This is a pattern now.

Argentina were losing 2-0 to Egypt in the round of 16 and still won 3-2.

Cape Verde took them to extra time in the round of 32 before Argentina won 3-2.

Then Switzerland pushed them to extra time in the quarter-final and lost 3-1 anyway.

And now England.

And Argentina have not lost a single game at this World Cup, 7 played and 7 won.

The truth is Argentina have not looked like champions for most of this tournament, and it has not stopped them once.

But you have to feel for England though.

This is the team that beat Norway 2-1 to get here, and they were beating the champions for most of the second half of this game.

They led a World Cup semi-final for 30 minutes and lost it in 7.
