The home dream is over for the USA, beaten 4-1 by Belgium in the round of 16.

In front of their own fans, they hoped this was the night they would pull it off to make history, but Belgium were simply too strong.

Malik Tillman did give them a goal to cheer, but there was never a way back once Belgium found their rhythm.

There was one bit of good news before kickoff too.

Their striker Folarin Balogun had been given a red card earlier in the tournament, but it was overturned, so he was cleared to play.

But even with that weird event, it was not enough to change the story and to stop Belgium from scoring 4 times against them.

Even so, this was a real run for the hosts, and it deserves to be remembered that way.

They started Group D with a big 4-1 win over Paraguay, then beat Australia 2-0.

They lost their last group game 3-2 to Turkey, but they had already done enough to top the group.

Then in the round of 32 they beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0, even after a red card left them with 10 men.

They were led all the way by captain Christian Pulisic (Milan), with Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams alongside him.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino, a well-known manager, gave this team real credibility on the biggest stage.

So the home World Cup ends in the round of 16, and while it hurts tonight, reaching the last 16 at home is a proud step for this team.
