Egypt are out, and it is kind of a shock because in their last match against Argentina they were minutes away from creating one of the biggest upsets of this tournament.

Just getting to the round of 16 was already special, because for years they kept going out in the group stage.

They finished 2nd in Group G with 5 points, drawing 1-1 with Belgium, beating New Zealand 3-1, and drawing 1-1 with Iran.

Then in the round of 32 they drew 1-1 with Australia and won the penalty shootout 4-2 to reach the last 16.

That set up a huge game against Argentina, the reigning world champions, and Egypt were fearless.

Yasser Ibrahim scored, then Mostafa Zico made it 2-0, and suddenly they were on the edge of a famous win.

Their goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir even saved a penalty from Lionel Messi, the best player in the world.

So for a while everyone, us included, thought Egypt were really going to knock out the champions.

But then Argentina scored 3 late goals to win it 3-2, and Egypt's dream was over.

To lead the world champions 2-0 and still lose is one of the cruelest ways to go out of a World Cup.

Salah was their leader all the way, and this was very likely his last World Cup, so it hurts even more.

The frustration will be immense in the squad and for the country, and it is now time to rebuild and prepare for the next competition in 4 years.
