How did Spain win the 2026 World Cup?
Spain won the World Cup by being almost impossible to score against.
It did not start like the story of champions though.
Their opener was a frustrating 0-0 draw against Cape Verde, who were playing their first ever World Cup game.
Then the goals came with a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia and a 1-0 win over Uruguay to win Group H with 7 points.
In the round of 32 they beat Austria 3-0 without any trouble.
Then came a huge round of 16 game against Portugal, and for a long time neither team could score.
But their midfielder Mikel Merino scored in the 90+1 minute, a minute into added time, to win it 1-0.
Merino then won the quarter-final against Belgium 2-1 with a goal in the 88th minute.
Belgium's attacking midfielder Charles De Ketelaere scored that day, and it was the only goal Spain let in all tournament.
In the semi-final they beat France, one of the biggest favorites, 2-0 and stayed in control the whole way.
Mikel Oyarzabal scored a penalty and defender Pedro Porro added the 2nd goal.
France never created one clear chance all game.
That set up the final against Argentina, the reigning champions.
Even though neither side scored in the 90 minutes, Spain controlled the game all the way through.
And Argentina's goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez made save after save.
Then, right at the end of normal time, Argentina's Enzo Fernandez got a 2nd yellow card and had to leave the game.
Now Argentina were down to 10 players for the whole of extra time, and Spain finally found the goal they needed.
Their forward Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute, and 1-0 was enough to make Spain champions.
And at just 19 years old, their attacker Lamine Yamal was the star of this Spain team.
He plays for Barcelona, and he is the most exciting young player in the game right now.
Their coach Luis de la Fuente is the man who built these champions.
So Spain end the tournament as the team nobody could beat, and now they are the best in the world.
