Mexico have already done the hard part

This is the final game of Group A, and for the co-hosts it could hardly have gone better.

Mexico are co-hosting this World Cup (with the USA and Canada), and they have made the most of playing at home.

They opened with a 2-0 win over South Africa.

Then they beat South Korea 1-0 to make it 6 points from 6.

That is a perfect record, and they have not let in a single goal yet.

So they are already at the top of the group and already through to the knockout round, no matter what happens here.

Why Czech Republic must win?

Czech Republic are 35th in the FIFA rankings, and their tournament hangs by a thread.

They started with a 1-2 loss to South Korea.

Then they drew 1-1 with South Africa, which left them on just 1 point.

So only a win will give them a small chance of going through and staying in the tournament.

And even a win may not be enough on its own, because they need other results to go their way too.

That makes this a free hit for them, since they can throw everyone forward with nothing left to lose.

Can Czech Republic upset the hosts?

On paper this is close, and the odds say so too.

Mexico are the favorites at about +100 (even money), which is roughly a 50% chance to win.

Czech Republic are about +275, and the draw is about +300, so any of the three results feels possible.

One big reason the gap is so small is that Mexico are already through and may rest a few players.

Their best chance of a shock rests on striker Patrik Schick, who has a really good chance to score.
